For a job in recruitment you’ll be expected to work towards exceeding targets. You’ll have to prepare CVs, and use databases to match the candidate to the right client. Build relationships with clients and candidates, use adverts via social media to attract new ones, organise interviews and brief candidates on job roles. You’ll need the ability to multi-task, problem solve, tenacity, self-motivation, and strong negotiation skills.
In order to be considered for a recruitment consultant role you’ll need to be enthusiastic and target driven in your approach. You should enjoy the challenge of a fast paced sales environment and fully understand the market that you operate in. 

Key tasks

Those in recruitment roles are required to negotiate contracts and headhunt top candidates in order to stay one step ahead of their competitors. Recruiters also interview and assess prospective applicants, go through the process of matching them to the right jobs and from that, draw up a shortlist of the best candidates to interview. Once the successful applicant has been sourced the recruiter will help the applicant all they can and prepare them for interviews while building key relationships with clients.

Key skills

The skills required for a recruitment role are varied but most consist of the following.
  • Good sales skills because the recruiter needs to sell the candidate to the client.
  • Confidence to push through any deal, and that confidence may also need to be instilled in the candidate ahead of their interview.
  • Energy. A recruiter will need lots of it in order to keep going as they will be looking after plenty of clients.
  • Commercial awareness of the current job market is a necessity.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • The ability to organise time and clients while working in a team.

Qualifications and experience

If you’re not applying for a junior recruitment role then it’s preferable to have prior experience. You’ll need to be a good communicator, have enthusiasm and be able to extract the main selling points of your client.
There are no set qualification requirements as such but a good overall level of academic achievement will be advantageous.
