Whether you’re just starting your career or are a seasoned professional, we can help you find the right paralegal jobs to match your skills and interests.

Paralegal roles

Professionals in paralegal jobs work in a variety of organisations to support other legal professionals. A paralegal has extensive knowledge of the law and legal matters but is not a qualified lawyer themselves.

Instead they work alongside solicitors and barristers, undertaking a wide range of administrative and legal work, from researching and preparing legal documents to interviewing clients and witnesses.

There is an administrative aspect to the role too, such as organising legal files, undertaking general office work, monitoring changes to government regulations, and handling confidential client or case information.

Paralegal responsibilities include going to court and handling a caseload of clients. They may also provide legal consultation.

A paralegal job is extremely varied due to the unique nature of each case, and professionals in the roles will likely find themselves experiencing all aspects of the legal industry.

Professionals in paralegal roles can also choose an area of law in which to specialise, including crime, employment, family, conveyancing, dispute resolution, personal injury, or wills.

Some paralegals take on the role in preparation for becoming a lawyer themselves, while the workload itself often mirrors that of a trainee or newly-qualified solicitor.

FAQs

What qualifications do I need to become a paralegal?

The LLB Law - which is equivalent to a BA or BSc degree - is one of the recommended qualifications that will help paralegals secure job roles. There are also Specialist Paralegal Qualifications offered by CLT Scotland on flexible distance learning courses, which provide a non-traditional way into paralegal roles. Other routes include gaining a law degree, an award in legal studies, a legal secretary certificate or diploma, or a paralegal practice award from the National Association of Licensed Paralegals. Furthermore, applicants to paralegal roles will be expected to have a good standard of general education.

What skills does a paralegal need to have?

Professionals in paralegal jobs are expected to have a good understanding of the law and legal system - and a desire to develop this - as well as robust administration skills. They must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong research and organisational skills, and good attention to detail. The ability to work in a pressured environment, work as part of a team, and effectively manage time are also key.

What does a paralegal do?

Paralegal responsibilities include researching and preparing legal documents, administration, interviewing clients and witnesses, providing legal information to clients, going to court and having a caseload of clients. Their overall goal is to effectively support the solicitors and barristers they work alongside.

Can you get a paralegal job with no experience?

It is certainly possible to secure a paralegal job with no real world work experience. Candidates without experience will be most successful if they apply to entry level paralegal positions, and apply for paralegal jobs in practice areas which they have studied. It is also worth applying for temporary and fixed contract paralegal jobs that will give applicants that important real world experience.

How to get a paralegal job

If you’re a paralegal looking for your next opportunity, Michael Page can help.
