Key legal tasks

If you enter at a junior level then your legal role would most probably require you to support and assist senior lawyers, produce legal documents, work with audio files (dictation), communicate with clients, make appointments and manage diaries. You will need to be highly computer literate, prepare court forms and statements, handle confidential information, keep records, and perform filing and general administrative work. If you enter as an experienced hire then expect to attend court hearings, draw up contracts and other legal documents. There is also a requirement to research, gather evidence and negotiate. Also settling disputes, analysing legal documents and supervising legal assistants.

Key legal skills

Stamina, energy and resilience. You may need to sacrifice your time, working long hours in order to get the right result for a client.
Tenacity, knowing when to keep going is a precious skill.
Adaptability to changing situations
Attention to detail especially when it comes to examining legal documents
Good communication skills are absolutely imperative to get your message across.
Intellectual ability, you have to be smart and be able to demonstrate this.

Qualifications and experience

If you're in the legal sector but do not have any formal qualifications then don't despair, an NVQ (Level 4) in Legal Practice will be your best option.  Relevant work experience will be beneficial when you apply for a position.
Paralegals and legal executives can graduate to become solicitors after a minimum five-year qualifying period, and thereafter, they become a Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives. This will be the case for a period of 2 years.
To be a solicitor or barrister, a university degree of 2:1 or above is normally expected in the law discipline. 
If you haven't got a degree in law then you will need to take the postgraduate Diploma in Law or the Common Professional Examination (CPE).
